Golden Boy Promotions claim Mosley vs. Mayweather is like the Super Bowl and will draw 3 million PPV

I understand the concept behind hyping up or “selling” a fight but some of the comments coming from Golden Boy Promotions is a little overboard. Both Oscar De La Hoya and Richard Schaefer recently made some comments that have some people shaking their heads a day later. Let’s examine further.

“It's like watching the Super Bowl or the NBA Championship. It's boxing's version of the World Series.” Oscar De La Hoya, Philboxing

I think it’s safe to say that the Super Bowl of Boxing would be Floyd vs. Manny. This fight is more like the Conference Championship game.

Let’s also keep in mind that this year’s Super Bowl has become the most watched television show/event in the history of television. So, to say that this fight is like the Super Bowl is far fetched.

"This is the fight where one plus one equals three...the three stands for three million homes. We will break all PPV records with this fight!" Richard Schaefer, Philboxing

Not only is Richard’s math off but his prediction is as well. Now, I think this fight will be the most watched PPV of the year and possibly the last few years. But, I don’t think this fight draws more than half of what “Slick Rick” is predicting.

There’s no way this fight breaks all PPV records. In all honesty, Mosley isn’t a big enough name like De La Hoya and Mayweather were. Mayweather and Manny could potentially break this PPV record especially after all of this public verbal warfare. But, I digress.

Stanley Erickson Sacramento, CA “GBP can’t possibly think Mayweather and Mosley will draw 3 million PPV buys?”

Sure they do. They think Mayweather and Mosley is the Super Bowl. Personally, I think they are taking some of that A-side Meth when they make comments like this. I’m all for hyping up a fight but this is beyond hype. This is “Mayweather Madness”. If I didn’t know that Schaefer and Oscar said these things, I would think it came straight from the mouth of a Mayweather.

Vince Gould Sacramento, CA “What is a realistic number of PPV buys for this Mayweather fight?”

I think 1.25 – 1.5 million PPV buys is a good estimate. If Mosley was in his prime then you could probably get a little higher. Also, I think Mayweather might have turned off some fans with all his outrageous bashing of Manny Pacquiao. And the fact that the public was teased with the epic encounter of Floyd vs. Manny could also turn off some to buying this fight.
