Floyd Mayweather vs Shane Mosley - must see boxing?

Shane Mosley will fight Floyd Mayweather Junior on May, 1st.

It will be a clash between multi-division champions and two of the biggest names in boxing.

The fight will feature arguably the two best American boxers below the middleweight limit of the last fifteen years.

Los Angeles based Golden Boy Promotions will put their marketing machine to work and at least one million viewers will tune into the event broadcast on HBO pay per view.

But when the viewers - live and those watching in from home - walk away from Mayweather vs. Mosley, will the be entertained?

Is this fight must watch television?

From a historical perspective, boxing fans will flock to this fight due to the fact that both men have had decorated careers and are Hall of Fame bound.

Mosley, 38 years old and representing Pomona, California, is the owner of a record that stands at 45 wins and 5 losses, 75 percent of his victories have come by the way of knock-out. The man who has been dubbed "Sugar", has held world titles in the lightweight, welterweight, and junior middleweight classes.

Yet, Mosley is not known for creating the sort of action in the ring that creates instant classics or fight of the years. Hand speed and holding have been the calling card of Mosley in recent years.

Mayweather, fighting out of Las Vegas, Nevada, with a fighting record of 40 wins and no losses, and has held titles in the super featherweight, lightweight, junior welterweight, and welterweight, and junior middleweight classes.

Though technically brilliant, and almost a perfect boxer, Mayweather's style - punctuated by brilliant defense and counter-punching, is not conducive to barn burners or television friendly action.

So while their pedigrees cannot be questioned, the fight looks to be another boxing event with a huge build-up and small pay-off for the fans.

Will either man let caution fly into the May Las Vegas sky and push the fight, then finding a willing partner across the ring?

Mayweather: Mosley is one of the best

Floyd Mayweather Jr will face WBA super world champion Shane Mosley on May 1 at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand and the unbeaten 32-year-old insists his opponent is one of the best in the business, but remains confident he can overcome the 38-year-old Mosley.

Mayweather’s signature on Wednesday was the final piece of the jigsaw after Mosley had signed the contract earlier in the week. 'Sugar' Shane is also willing to submit to the Olympic-style random blood tests in the run-up to the fight, the disputed element which ruined Mayweather’s bout with Manny Pacquiao.

Mayweather maintained he only wants to fight the best since returning to the ring following a short-lived retirement. The claim comes after the American faced criticism for avoiding the best fighters in his division including Mosley.

"This one is definitely for the fans as I wasn't going to waste anyone's time with a meaningless tune-up bout and asked to fight Shane immediately,” said Mayweather, 40-0 (25 KOs).

"I have said ever since I came back to the sport that I only wanted to fight the best. I think Shane is one of the best, but come May 1, he still won't be great enough to beat me.”

Mosley has been chasing a fight with Mayweather for years and is confident he will inflict the first defeat on ‘Money’ Mayweather’s career.

"I have always wanted to fight Floyd and now it is finally coming true," said Mosley, 46-5 (39 KOs).

"I am already in great shape and ready to show everyone on May 1 that I am stronger, faster and better than he is. I will have no problem beating him."

Leonard Ellerbe, chief executive of Mayweather Promotions, said: "Floyd has been trying to make this fight for the last 10 years, so he is extremely excited about the opportunity to face Shane. He can't wait to extend his undefeated record and perform at the highest level.

"More importantly, he is also happy to set the precedent for random blood testing in order to ensure fair and safe contests for all fighters."

Fellow promoters Golden Boy, who have a stake in both fighters, were also keen to talk up both the bout and the anti-doping measures.

Richard Schaefer, Golden Boy CEO, said: "When two champions of this calibre meet in the ring, you can expect nothing but excellence and that is what we are going to see on May 1.

"Shane Mosley is one of the greatest fighters of this era and I commend him for not only agreeing to the fight against Mayweather, but also agreeing to participate in a testing process that can only help the integrity of the sport."source(sports.stv.tv)

Shane Mosley signed a deal to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Shane mosley is eager to fight manny pacman pacquiao once he overcome Floy Money Mayweatther Jr on their upcoming fight this march. He signed a contract to fight the undefeated records of mayweather.

Many boxing fans wanted to see the fight of pacquiao vs mayweather but because both camp did not agree on the process of drug testing, so they decided to cancel the fight between pacquiao and mayweather. Now, pacquiao is preparing to fight Joshua Clottey and Mayweather is preparing to fight Shane Mosley. The question is , “Which do you think have the higher pay per view”, the pacquiao vs clottey or mayweather vs mosley.

"It's a fight people have wanted to see for a long time, but never happened for whatever reasons," Burstein told the Los Angeles Times. "Now that it's going to happen, Shane is looking forward to doing what he and many of his fans have long thought he would do."

Mosley has been after a fight with Mayweather for a long time and even went so far as to challenge him on live TV during Mayweather’s post fight interview after overcoming Marquez in September.

Mosley had initially been scheduled to fight Andre Berto on January 30, but Berto had to withdraw due to the disaster in Haiti where members of his family live.

Now Mosley's attentions will turn to the long-awaited showdown with Mayweather, whose own fight against Pacquiao was scrapped due to the disagreement over blood testing. Mosley, however, is willing to submit to Mayweather’s stipulations for random drug testing, but it has still to be confirmed if Mosley’s WBA welterweight title will be on the line.

"We're ready to do it. I'm ready to go. I'm happy. It's May 1. It's something that I've wanted, and it's something that the fans will get a great deal of excitement out of. Everybody needs to come out and watch it, because it's history," Mosley told FanHouse.

"I just need to do what I do. Floyd has fought a lot of guys who are past their prime. Or he's fought a lot of guys who weren't as fast as him or as big as him. Or he'd just pick and choose," said Mosley.

"But this is a fight that I think that he's gotten pushed into because the Pacquiao fight fell out. So he got pushed into this fight. He didn't really want it."

"It wasn't just two months ago, but a year ago I've been trying to get a fight. I thought that after the Margarito fight, that I would land one right away. But they waited me out, waited me out, and I waited until the time was right. Now they have no choice but to come to me," said Mosley. SOURCE(sport.stv.tv)
